Default New British camo for Afghan war theatre

New camouflage, left, is designed to help troops blend into Afghan terrain better.

British troops will get new camouflage uniforms for the first time in more than 40 years
New design is based on computer modeling of Afghanistan's terrain, defense ministry said
Project included aerial and scientific photography "to provide the right colors and their brightness"

London, England (CNN) -- British troops will get new camouflage uniforms for the first time in more than 40 years, based on computer modeling of Afghanistan's terrain, the Ministry of Defence announced Sunday.

The "multi-terrain pattern," as the military has dubbed the new design, is the first new pattern from the Ministry of Defence since 1968, it said.

It is specifically designed with Afghanistan's Helmand province in mind, the ministry said in a statement. The British military have suffered heavy losses in the southern province this year. More than 100 British troops have died in Afghanistan in 2009, making it the deadliest for UK troops in many years.

The new design was put together in six months, funded as an "urgent operational requirement" project worth £250,000

"This new camouflage will help our troops blend into different environments in Helmand Province to stay hidden from the Taliban," Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said in a statement.

The project included aerial and scientific photography in Afghanistan "to provide the right colors and their brightness," the ministry said. "The colors were fed into a computer and computer modeling was used to represent the Green Zone, deserts and mixed environments in Afghanistan."

Uniforms in the new pattern will be issued to 4 Mechanised Brigade troops deploying to Afghanistan in March, the ministry said. It will then be introduced across all three services starting in 2011.

should be interesting. as far as i know all ISAF troops use desert cammo including the irish. one of the reasons i was told when i asked why, was that the only troops in the country that wear green cammo is the afghan army and they were the main target for the taliban so the different colours distinguish each other.
the new pattern looks bit green...........should be better as dpm but hope they dont get targeted more being mistaken as afghan army

the afghan army are wearing american issue equipment but in the woodland pattern

this is a rough copy of the multicam pattern, personally I think its not great, theres too much green in it for afghanistan and has been a rush job

the new american one that you posted the other day is the business. would like to see it "in the flesh" to see if its as good as it looks. dpm is a strange one; patterns that one would think should work sometimes arent that good and vice versa eg the swedish one looks just plane weird but i wear it the whole time for hunting as it suits irish conditions perfectly.
