I'm very pleased for the very few who will be able to take advantage of this opportunity to do, under conditions of almost unimaginable physical security, safeguarding of components and supervision, what I do almost every saturday in the comfort of my little wooden shed at the end of the backyard.

However, I would be much happier if everybody else who wished to learn this simple and fascinating skill could also join the 100 million of us who safely make our own ammunition without being imprisoned in a bunker with an armed guard watching over us.

I watched yesterday, fascinated, as Mr Aherne blithely talked in public of his firm belief in equality for all, in the presence of the Northern Irish First Minister and the assembled press.

Some, it seems, are still a lot more equal than others.
